一个英语单词可能会有多种意思，其中有一个是核心意思，但是在翻译过程中如果只按照其核心意思去翻，那么译文就失去了原味，也就不能表达出句子的原本意思。这时需要根据上下文去用它的引申义。terrible一词的核心意思是“可怕的，糟糕的”，eg: a terrible storm 可怕的风暴；a terrible performance 很糟糕的表演。但是在下面句子中不能这样直译：
He shoulders terrible responsibilities.（极端的，极其令人敬畏的）
他肩负着重大的责任。
The professor is so terrible. （不好的，糟糕的）

Lucy had a terrible time at the party.（不愉快的，令人厌恶的）
